Artist on Art Presents

Laura Barnes Walker

February 8, 2013

Local artist,  belly dancer, and educator Laura Barnes Walker came into the KZSC station on February 4, 2013 to talk about her meditation/yoga/dance practice.

For nearly two decades, Laura has been studying  Tribal Belly Dance with Palika of Heavy Hips, Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, Mardi Love, Ashley Lopez among others. Tribal Belly dance focuses on group dancing that is extemporaneously choreographed by multiple leaders through a turn of the head and wave of a hand.

Laura started Calla Lily Tribal Belly Dance & Yoga in 2010 for art work and practice.  She teaches two classes each week at the West Side Studio on Swift Street in Santa Cruz. She believes that tribal belly dance is an incredible way to build community between women and loves watching her students make friends and move their bodies at the same time. She is organizing a performance for this year’s National Dance Week in April.
